About the Actual Aircraft
The main fighter aircraft, the F-15J Eagle, is based on the US Air Force's F-15C, which began combat deployment in 1974, and features unique equipment for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. It is equipped with a unique tactical electronic warfare system, J/TEWS, and a unique data link system.
Deployment to units began in 1982, and it continues to play a main role in the air defense of Japan's skies.
Eagle pilots are known as Eagle Riders and boast high piloting skills. To further enhance their abilities, elite pilots from the Japan Air Self-Defense Force's fighter squadrons are regularly selected to compete in combat-style competitions.
These competitions are known for featuring aircraft with various markings, delighting many fans. The 2002 air combat competition was held at Komatsu Air Base in Ishikawa Prefecture.
The aircraft of the 303rd and 306th Squadrons, based at the base, featured unique markings based on the respective unit's emblems (dragon and golden eagle).
