Its primary function is the production of thyroid hormones, but other organs in the body also require iodine for normal function. The importance of iodine intake has been demonstrated in many studies. The lower limit of iodine intake identified in these studies is 0.1mg per kg of body weight per day. For example, a 50kg woman would need 5mg of iodine per day. Iodide is required for normal thyroid function. The first studies conducted on female adolescents 80 years ago recommended 9mg of iodine per day. In the early 1900s, an iodine/iodide solution called Lugol's solution was widely used in the medical community, and has been shown to be effective and safe for a wide range of conditions including hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. The recommended daily intake of iodine supplements was 2 to 6 drops of Lugol's solution, which would provide 12.5 to 37.5 mg of total iodide. This amount was published in a 1995 medical literature review. Several researchers have provided clear evidence for the need for adequate iodine intake. Japanese women living in Japan consume an average of 13.8 mg of total iodine per day, and some studies have shown that iodine intake contributes significantly to their healthy lifestyles. In the 1960s, a loaf of bread in the United States contained 0.15 mg of iodine, the total recommended daily intake. In the past 20 years, iodine has been replaced by bromine in breadmaking. Bromine can suppress thyroid function and interfere with iodine metabolism in the body. The RDI for vitamins and minerals was established after World War II. One of the last essential elements included in the RDA was iodine, which was established in 1980 and confirmed in 1989. The RDA for iodine was based on the amount of iodine/iodide needed to prevent goiter, cretinism, and hypothyroidism. The optimal amount of iodine required by the human body has not been studied. Therefore, the optimal amount of iodine needed for physical and mental health is unknown. According to population studies, the average daily intake of iodine in mainland Japan is 13.8 mg, making them one of the healthiest populations in the world. Lugol’s solution has been proven over a long period of time, with records showing that two drops of Lugol’s solution contain 12.5 mg of iodine/iodide, which is very similar to the average intake of 13.8 mg for mainland Japanese.
