[Contents] The first-generation Fairlady Z, released in 1969, was a GT car combining a closed body and a six-cylinder engine, a departure from its predecessor, the Nissan Fairlady, a two-seater convertible. This dramatic "character change" was largely due to requests from the US market, which was its primary market. The US market did not offer the 2.0-liter engine that was the mainstay of the Japanese model, but instead featured a powerful 2.4-liter engine, eventually becoming a 2.8-liter engine. The name "Fairlady" was not used in the US, and the cars were simply referred to as "Z," with the engine displacement being combined to create the 240Z, 260Z, and 280Z models. As can be seen from the Japanese name on the card, Hot Wheels chose the Japanese model for its theme. However, this isn't in its stock form; the car features the aerodynamically superior G-nose fascia, a designation exclusive to Japan, combined with a large front spoiler and overfenders. At first glance, it looks like an official racing model, but the taillights are road racer spec, with the so-called Japan tails transplanted from the fifth-generation Skyline.
